Nathan Peterson wins A&M System Student Veteran Excellence Award

BRYAN, COLLEGE  STATION, Texas – Nathan Peterson,  a military veteran student worker at the RELLIS Academic Alliance, has been awarded the 2023 Student Veteran Excellence Award for his outstanding service and support to the campus and community.

Peterson served as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserve from August 2016 to July 2022. He is a graduate student of The Bush School of Government and Public Service and is employed as a student worker at the Academic Alliance providing on-campus support for military students.

Greg Sikowski, a fellow graduate student and friend, nominated Peterson for his exceptional service. Greg says Peterson’s past and present service to his country and peers made him an excellent candidate for this award.

“Nathan’s character is what makes him special. Nathan consistently sets an example for other students by being reliable during group work, focused during individual work, and setting himself to a high academic standard at all times,” Sikowski said. “He acts as a connector by helping other students get to know each other and being outgoing and friendly to those around him. His positive attitude towards his peers and the faculty at the Bush School make him a natural leader.”

Dr. Nancy Shankle, Associate Vice Chancellor and Provost at RELLIS, says Peterson has played a pivotal role in empowering student veterans to overcome challenges and thrive in their academic pursuits.

“Nathan’s contributions extend beyond the classroom, as he actively engages with student veterans through workshops, mentorship programs, and community outreach initiatives,” Shankle said. “By fostering a supportive environment and cultivating a sense of camaraderie, Nathan has played a pivotal role in empowering student veterans to overcome challenges and thrive in their academic pursuits. As a student veteran himself, Nathan has experienced firsthand the challenges faced by individuals transitioning from military service to higher education.”

The Texas A&M University System Student Veteran Excellence Award is given annually to a student veteran who serves as an advocate for student veterans or veteran issues. The recipient must be nominated through the veteran services office with one letter of support.
