Response tools

Texas A&M University System members are committed to providing a learning, working and living environment that promotes personal integrity, civility, and mutual respect in an environment free of sexual misconduct and discrimination. Sexual discrimination not only violates an individual’s fundamental rights and personal dignity, it is also a violation of federal and state law. Texas A&M University System members consider sexual discrimination in all its forms to be a serious offense.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. Sex Discrimination is a behavior or action that denies or limits a person’s ability to benefit from, fully participate in educational programs or activities or employment opportunities because of a person’s sex. This refers to all forms of sex discrimination, including but not limited to: sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, sexual exploitation, sexual violence, and failure to provide equal opportunity in educational programs and co-curricular programs including athletics, discrimination based on pregnancy, and employment discrimination.

To ensure compliance with Title IX and other federal and state civil rights laws, Texas A&M University System members have developed rules and procedures, followed by System policies that prohibit sex discrimination in all its forms.

Any member of the campus community or public who witnesses, is subjected to, or is informed about incidents of discrimination, sexual harassment, and/or related retaliation should report the incident to the Title IX Coordinator (979.317.3404; civilrights@rellis.tamus.edu), who handles alleged violations perpetrated by students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

All members of the campus community are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that does not infringe upon the rights of others.

No individual will, on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, sexual orientation or gender identity be excluded from participation in, or be denied the benefit of or be subjected to discrimination under any system program or activity.

Complaints of sexual harassment may be made to the Title IX Coordinator (979.317.3404; civilrights@rellis.tamus.edu).

In accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Texas A&M University System members will not discriminate against any student or exclude any student from an education program or activity (including any class or extracurricular activity) on the basis of such student’s pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, or recovery therefrom, unless the student requests voluntarily to participate in a separate portion of the program or activity. Texas A&M University System members will not apply any rules concerning a student’s actual or potential parental, family or marital status that treat students differently on the basis of sex.

Title IX regulations also require Texas A&M University System members to treat pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, and recovery therefrom as a justification for a leave of absence for so long a period of time as is deemed medically necessary by the student’s physician. At the conclusion of the leave of absence the student will be reinstated to the status which she held when the leave began. Students requesting leave of absence under this provision must submit their request to the Title IX Coordinator (979.317.3404), who will initiate the process.

In addition, some university programs and/or classes may involve exposure to chemicals, radiation, or other circumstances that could harm an unborn child. In these cases, pregnant students or students planning to become pregnant should consult their health care provider to determine what, if any, additional precautions are needed based on their individual situation. It is the responsibility of the student to communicate their needs to the Title IX Coordinator (979.317.3404), as soon as possible in order for risk-reduction to begin when it can be most effective, and to determine if additional modifications are necessary. While Texas A&M University System members cannot require pregnant students or students who plan to become pregnant to notify it, we strongly recommend that they do so in order for appropriate steps to be taken to ensure the health of both the parent and the child.

Nursing mothers who need access to the lactation rooms in either the Blinn Schwartz Building or the RELLIS Academic Alliance complex can visit the reception desk in either building to gain access.

Emergency notification at RELLIS is provided though the Blinn Alert program, an emergency notification communications system utilized for contacting students, faculty and staff. The system is used for emergencies, school closings or other vital information. Students at RELLIS are automatically enrolled in the alert system.

Alerts can be sent via phone call, text and email and will contain details of the situation and ask for confirmation upon receipt. At the beginning of each semester a system-wide test is completed, typically within the first three weeks of class.

RELLIS Alert is Texas A&M RELLIS’ emergency notification system that provides the ability to communicate health and safety information in an emergency. RELLIS Alert utilizes the same vendor as Texas A&M University’s Code Maroon emergency notification system; however, RELLIS Alert is separate from Code Maroon.

RELLIS will use the system only to provide official notification of critical emergencies (i.e. situations that pose an imminent, physical threat to the community).

Students, faculty and staff will be automatically signed up with their university email each semester they are an active student, faculty or staff member.
