STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Valentina Gonzalez

Spring 2026 Graduate

B.S. Criminal Justice

During her time at RELLIS, Valentina became a confident and independent student while pursuing her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Tarleton State University at RELLIS. Through her academic experiences, she discovered the importance of empathy and serving her community with compassion.

The welcoming and close-knit community at RELLIS played a significant role in shaping her perspective and helping her develop her vision of leadership.

“Leadership is not always about being the loudest person in the room, but about being dependable, supportive, and willing to help others. Through my experiences, I learned the importance of empathy, communication, and serving my community with compassion, especially in the criminal justice field.”

Valentina said her time at RELLIS helped strengthen valuable skills such as communication and critical thinking. Beyond academics, she also developed resilience, professionalism, and perseverance while navigating the challenges of being a first-generation student.

“My time at RELLIS helped me strengthen skills such as communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and adaptability. Beyond academics, it also reinforced important values like resilience, empathy, professionalism, and perseverance. As a first-generation student, I learned how to overcome challenges and stay determined, and I believe those experiences will help me stand out and connect with others in the criminal justice field.”

One of Valentina’s favorite aspects of RELLIS was the tight-knit atmosphere of the smaller campus, which allowed her to build meaningful connections with classmates and professors. This encouraging atmosphere motivated her to stay focused on her academic goals while preparing for her future career.

“My favorite part about studying at RELLIS has been the supportive and welcoming environment. The smaller campus atmosphere made it easier to build connections with classmates and professors, which helped me feel more comfortable and motivated throughout my academic journey. I also appreciated how focused the campus is on helping students prepare for their future careers and giving us opportunities to grow both academically and personally.”

One of her most meaningful memories at RELLIS was taking a moment to reflect on everything she had overcome and achieved.

“One experience I will always remember is realizing how far I had come academically and personally during my final semesters. There was a moment when I looked around at my classmates and thought about everything it took for me to get there as a first-generation student balancing responsibilities, challenges, and self-doubt. It made me feel proud of myself and grateful for everyone who supported me along the way. That feeling of accomplishment is something I will always carry with me.”

Valentina plans to pursue a career in criminal justice where she hopes to gain hands on experience while making a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

“I am excited to begin building my career within the criminal justice field and continue learning through real-world experience. I am especially interested in areas involving investigations, victim advocacy, and helping others within the justice system.” she says. “My goal is to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives while continuing to grow professionally and personally.”

As she prepares to transition into life beyond graduation, Valentina reflects on how her journey at RELLIS shaped her both personally and professionally.

“My journey at RELLIS has been more than just earning a degree, it has been a journey of growth, self-discovery, and proving to myself that I am capable of achieving my goals. As a first-generation Latina student, graduating represents not only a personal accomplishment, but also something meaningful for my family and community. I hope my journey can inspire others to pursue higher education and believe in themselves, even when the path feels challenging.”

Valentina attributes her success to the continuous support from her family during her time at RELLIS. She also credits her classmates and professors for fostering an encouraging environment that supports her success.
